The Miritini Drug Rehabilitation Programme was launched by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) in response to the growing problem of alcohol and drug abuse in the Coast Region of Kenya. The region had the highest number of injecting drug users and was ranked second in the abuse of khat and tobacco, and first in the abuse of cannabis and heroin/cocaine.
The Miritini drug rehabilitation centre provides a holistic approach to treatment and rehabilitation of alcohol and drug abuse by embracing prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, harm reduction initiatives, early detection, counselling and re-integration of persons with substance use disorders.
The programme aimed to provide a safe and supportive environment for those struggling with addiction and help them overcome their substance abuse. Many young people in the region lack skills and opportunities for meaningful employment, which makes them vulnerable to drug abuse and involvement in petty crime. The lack of adequate public facilities for treatment and rehabilitation also made it difficult for them to seek help.
The Miritini Drug Rehabilitation Programme has become a success story. The Operationalisation of Miritini rehabilitation and treatment centre has helped hundreds of young people break free from addiction and turn their lives around. Over 300 outpatient and inpatient clients have been treated for various drug use disorders. They have have received the support and resources they need to overcome their challenges, find new purpose in their lives, and become positive role models in their communities.
The success of the programme has inspired hope and renewed determination in the region's fight against drug abuse. It shows that with the right support and resources, anyone can overcome addiction and achieve their goals.
