Transformer installation and maximization Programme

To increase connectivity and access to electricity in the rural areas, Rural Electrification & Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) was mandated to implement the Programme for Transformer installation and maximization for Constituencies. The main agenda was to install transformers along the already existing Medium Voltage lines and ensure connectivity to all households located within 600meters radius from the transformer. Maximization of the already existing transformers is also done by ensuring that all households within 600m are connnected.
This programme has been a major success and has resulted in social economic transformation. During the last 5 years, REREC has connected 75,521 households.

Electrification of Public Facilities

Electricity is a critical factor to high quality of life. REREC has electrified 1,862 public facilities in the past five years comprising of health Centres and trading centres which has played a vital role in spurring economic activities within the rural areas resulting to enhanced standards of living for households. It has also improved security through installation of high masts. Electrification of public primary and secondary schools has improved educational standards through extended study hours and access to digital learning programs.

Garissa 50MW Solar Plant

The 54.6 megawatt (MW) plant implemented by REREC is the largest solar plant in East and Central Africa; located 15 kilometres from Garissa Town. The project was commissioned in 2019 by His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta and was aimed at promoting the use of renewable energy thereby cutting reliance on expensive thermal power.
